Europe 'Unaware' Of Its Water Footprint.

While Europe may take better care of its water resources than other continents, it in fact uses larger quantities via imports of goods such as cotton, beans or wood, which often come from regions that already suffer from water scarcity, argues one UN expert.

The notion of “virtual water” embedded in a commodity or a product, is an essential part of the ‘water footprint’ theory but has not yet received much attention, according to the expert in question.

However, she warned: “You are going to hear about this virtual water trade a lot more in the next few years.”

A water footprint is the total amount of water a country needs to sustain its population and industry. But while Europe tries to take good care of its own resources, it uses water from other places via its agribusiness imports. It’s important to find out about each country's footprint, how much of their water comes from outside the country and what was the energy needed to bring in that water.

Pollution-Related Asthma May Start In The Womb.

Children who are born in areas with high levels of traffic-related pollution are known to face an elevated risk of asthma, but new research suggests this heightened risk may be acquired in the womb.

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health studied umbilical cord blood from children born in New York.

They identified a gene change that appears to be associated with prenatal exposure to chemical compounds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are created when carbon-containing fuels are burnt.

Can Bamboo Save Our Forests And Help End Poverty?

A shift towards more bamboo production by small scale farmers in Vietnam could reduce poverty and help circumvent worldwide demand for timber as a building material, according to a new study.

Due to its many benefits, bamboo has been touted as an environmental miracle crop. It’s a significant carbon sink, it grows fast, is more termite-resistant than timber, and can be used for everything from food to clothing material to scaffolding for building construction.

But are environmentalists being bamboozled? Despite its benefits, increased bamboo production could raise a lot of concerns too.

Wellbeing of Women.

Wellbeing of Women is the only UK charity dedicated to solving the health problems that affect women by funding medical research and training into all aspects of reproductive health.
We focus on 3 key areas:
- Pregnancy and birth - e.g. premature birth, infertility, recurrent miscarriage
- Gynaecological cancers - e.g. ovarian, cervical and uterine
- Everyday problems - e.g. period pain, endometriosis, menopause, incontinence, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Half of all women in the UK still experience a reproductive health problem during their lifetime, be it trouble conceiving, intensely painful periods or gynaecological cancer. Wellbeing of Women is the only charity dedicated to changing this by funding medical research that will benefit these women and the professionals who diagnose and treat them.

Energy Efficient Ironing.

When you only have one last thing left to iron, turn your iron off before you iron it rather than after.

It will still be hot enough to iron well, and although a small contribution, it's the collective effect of all these small things which really adds up to make a big difference.
