Charity Of The Week.
Martin House Children's Hospice
Martin House is here to provide care and support, free of charge, to children and young people with a life limiting illness, and also to their families. The hospice provides a home from home environment and families can use any mix of a range of services, including: respite care, symptom control, nursing and practical care, terminal care and bereavement support This same range of services is offered to the families in their own homes.
We have a dedicated team here comprising of carers, medical team, psychologist, art and music therapists, physiotherapists, fundraisers, our chef and lots of dedicated volunteers, all of whom are passionate about their work and strive to make the hospice vibrant, alive and loving.
We are currently supporting almost 400 children, young people and families and 130 bereaved families.
At Martin House, we believe that the families we care for, and their choices, must be placed first in all our policies and care; we listen to, respect and value each member of the family as individuals with their own needs.
This approach ensures that we remain flexible in meeting demands and that we evolve as a service, fulfilling our objective and duty in delivering the best, and most personal, terminal care to the families, allowing them well-informed options as death approaches.
After the child has died, we continue to offer our complete support to their family through our committed bereavement support work, including support group work and activities for the bereaved siblings and visits to the family's home if they do not wish to visit the hospice.
