Secondhand Smoke Worsens Cystic Fibrosis.
Secondhand tobacco smoke can be particularly harmful for people with cystic fibrosis (CF), researchers have found.
Cystic fibrosis is the UK's most common life-threatening inherited illness, affecting more than 8,000 people.
The disease clogs the lungs and digestive system with thick, sticky mucous, making it hard for affected people to breathe and digest food.
Researchers have now found that inhaling secondhand smoke worsens patients' lung function, particularly for those with a specific gene variation.
The findings indicate that the gene variation in question doubles the negative effects of secondhand smoke.
One of the research team commented that the inhalation of secondhand smoke in people with the gene variation 'drastically accelerates reduced lung function'.
He added: 'It's always been suspected that secondhand smoke is detrimental to lung disease patients, and now we have a handle on one specific gene that clearly makes it worse for those with CF.'
