Pollution-Related Asthma May Start In The Womb.
Children who are born in areas with high levels of traffic-related pollution are known to face an elevated risk of asthma, but new research suggests this heightened risk may be acquired in the womb.
Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health studied umbilical cord blood from children born in New York.
They identified a gene change that appears to be associated with prenatal exposure to chemical compounds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are created when carbon-containing fuels are burnt.
Exposure to PAHs has previously been linked to diseases, including childhood asthma and cancer.
Study author Dr Shuk-mei Ho, chair of the university's department of environmental health and director of the Centre for Environmental Genetics, commented: "Our data support the concept that environmental exposures can interact with genes during key developmental periods to trigger disease onset later in life, and that tissues are being reprogrammed to become abnormal later."
The findings are likely to be relevant to many of the 1.1 million UK children who are currently receiving treatment for asthma.
